The timing belt is a component of the internal engine; it rotates the engine’s cam and crankshaft in sync, and ensures that the cylinders fire at the correct time. Simply put, your engine will not run without a fully functioning timing belt. Like most things in your vehicle, these eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Check your vehicle owner’s manual for their recommended replacement interval for the timing belt. It also doesn’t hurt to have all your belts and hoses checked every 3,000 miles, or at every oil change. Don’t get stuck on the side of the road with a dead vehicle because this important component wasn’t checked in time!
